Personalized Saxophone Lessons for Advanced Students in person or virtually

Students and My Philosophy

I teach from advanced middle school to professionals out of my studio in Castro Valley, California. I teach all styles, including classical and jazz. I also teach via Skype or Zoom for students that are too far away to travel to my studio. If you are interested in Zoom lessons, please ask me for  the recommended requirements.

Philosophically, I try to give my students a well-grounded instruction in theory, saxophone fundamentals (embouchure, breathing, tone production, tonguing, etc.), and style (phrasing, interpretation, etc.). My students have a chance to perform at area concerto competitions. My students regularly make the CBDA/CMEA All-State Honor Bands.

In addition, I have had students graduate from top-level music programs, including Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, and UCLA.

Yes, Wolford Studio welcomes students of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced and professional saxophonists. I tailor lessons to individual needs, ensuring a supportive environment for everyone eager to learn or improve their saxophone playing.

I currently teach on Saturdays and Wednesdays, with lessons available in person or virtually.

Yes—While in person lessons are always best, I'm available to teach via Zoom or Google Meet. If you would like to set up a free online interview, please contact me here

Here are the things you need to have in place in order to make this a productive experience:

A fast and reliable computer with a good webcam– This can be a desktop, or laptop. I don’t recommend doing this with your smartphone. The faster your system is, the more reliable your connection will be.

 • Good microphone – The built in mic in most computers is easily overpowered by the sound of the saxophone. I recommend you have a good USB mic like this one. If you don't we can give it a try to see if the sound quality is acceptable.

 • A fast and reliable internet connection– You must have a high speed connection and it can be on a wired or wireless network. Realize that a wireless network can occasionally be sketchy. A wired connection will be the most reliable.

 • Good speakers or headphones – Unless your laptop has very good internal speakers, I would suggest that you get good external speakers or use good headphones. This is a necessity in order to really hear the subtleties of tone and clarity.

If you are not sure if you have everything you need, or if your internet connection is fast enough, contact me for more information or to set up a free, no-obligation trial test of your system.

Google Meet or Zoom lessons need to be paid for in advance through my Venmo, Zelle, Google Pay or PayPal account.
